Collaboration

I am soooo excited to be sharing with you news of a little collaboration I just started working on. Though I guess I should start with a bit of the back story that led up to this.
Almost 10 years ago I met, in the most serendipitous way, my friend Gabriela Martinez. Long story short, we were virtually introduced through e-mail since at the time she was living in Milan, Italy and I was living in Monterrey, Mexico. Back then I was planning to spend a couple of months backpacking through Europe, and being on a tight budget I was constantly looking for people who were kind and generous enough to open their doors to a wandering traveler for a few nights. Gaby, barely knowing me, was one of those extremely kind people. I ended up spending a week with her in Milan, and got to know her and her story a bit more. I won’t go into details (although I should because they are interesting! So maybe some other time) but I can tell you that I fell in love with her. She is one of the most creative, talented and adventurous people I’ve ever met. She has been a source of inspiration to me ever since, and I deeply admire both her character and what she does.
Gaby is a graphic designer by education but what she’s most passionate about is sculpting the most detailed and amazing figures with plasticine (a kind of Play-Doh material). Many years ago she started working on animating her figures and making short films with them. Her latest, and I dare say her best, project in this field is the short animated film Los Defectuosos. She and her team  worked on this for over two years, and finally this year they got to present the stunning result of their hard work in several film festivals, and the satisfaction of seeing Los Defectuosos win awards in some of them.
As part of this project, Gaby started a blog specifically about this short film to share the experience of the creative process with those that are interested in the details involved in the making of Los Defectuosos. She shares stage by stage, from pre-production to post-production, what it took to create this little piece of art. And she wants this information to be available in English as well as Spanish, so she had another friend of hers helped out with the translation of her posts to English up until now. However, for personal reasons her friend wasn’t able to continue the task, and so here’s where I come in with my little grain of sand contribution to this fascinating project. I will be the English translator for this blog from now on, and you can now check out my first translated post for Diario Defectuoso here. Of course don’t forget to check out their previous posts, and to stay tuned for the upcoming ones.
It seriously makes me so happy to be able to contribute, even in the smallest way, to the journey of Los Defectuosos and most importantly to Gaby’s journey. It is such a joy and inspiration to see a dear friend, and fellow Mexican, succeeding in what she’s most passionate about.

Estoy muuuuy emocionada de compartir con ustedes la noticia de una pequeña colaboración en la que recién empecé a trabajar. Aunque supongo que debo empezar primero con un poco de la historia que llevó a esto.

Hace casi 10 años conocí, de la manera más inesperada, a mi amiga Gabriela Martínez. Para no hacerles el cuento largo, fuimos presentadas virtualmente a través de correo electrónico, ya que en aquel tiempo ella estaba viviendo en Milán, Italia  y yo en Monterrey, México.  En ese entonces yo estaba planeando pasar 2 meses en Europa viajando de mochilazo, y con un presupuesto apretado buscaba constantemente de gente que tuviera la bondad y generosidad suficiente para abrirle sus puertas por un par de noches a una errante viajera. Gaby, que apenas y me conocía, fue una de esas personas extremadamente generosas. Terminé pasando una semana con ella en Milán, y pude conocerla a ella y su historia un poco mejor. No les contaré aquí todos los detalles (aunque debería porque son algo interesantes! Asi que tal vez lo haga en otra ocasión) pero puedo decirles que me enamoré de ella. Es una de las personas más creativas, talentosas y aventureras  que he conocido. Ella ha sido una gran fuente de inspiración para mí desde entonces, y admiro profundamente su carácter y lo que hace.

Gaby es diseñadora grafica pero lo que más le apasiona es la escultura de las más detalladas y maravillosas figuras en plastilina. Hace muchos años empezó a trabajar en la animación de sus figuras, haciendo pequeños cortometrajes con ellas. Su más reciente, y me atrevo a decir que su mejor, proyecto en esta área es el cortometraje animado Los Defectuosos. Su equipo y ella trabajaron en él por más de dos años, y por fin este año pudieron presentar el estupendo resultado de su arduo trabajo en varios festivales de cines, y recibir la satisfacción de ver a Los Defectuosos ganar premios en algunos de ellos.

Como parte de este proyecto, Gaby empezó un blog específicamente sobre este cortometraje para compartir la experiencia del proceso creativo con aquellos interesados en los detalles de cómo lo hicieron.  Ella comparte etapa por etapa, desde la pre-producción hasta la post-producción, lo que les llevó crear este pedacito de arte.  Y quiere que esta información esté disponible tanto en inglés como en español, por lo cual tuvo la ayuda de un amigo suyo con la traducción al inglés de sus publicaciones hasta ahora. Sin embargo, por razones personales a su amigo no le fue posible continuar con esta tarea, y es aquí donde entro yo con mi granito de arena a contribuir a este fascinante proyecto. Yo seré la traductora al inglés de este blog de ahora en adelante, y ya pueden checar la primera publicación traducida por mí para Diario Defectuoso aquí. Por supuesto que no dejen de checar las publicaciones anteriores, y de estar pendientes de las publicaciones futuras.

Realmente me hace muy feliz poder contribuir, aunque sea de la manera más pequeña, al trayecto de Los Defectuosos pero sobretodo al trayecto de Gaby. Es una gran alegría para mí y gran inspiración ver a una querida amiga, y paisana, alcanzar el éxito haciendo lo que le apasiona.

And the winner is…

After a hectic and wonderful couple of days, I was finally able to sit down and do the random draw to pick the winner of the Holiday Giveaway 2012. Not to add more to the suspense of the announcement, but first let me clarify what method I used to guarantee that the draw was in fact random. I assigned the participants a number based on their place in the giveaway entry line, meaning the first person to enter the giveaway was assigned the number one, the second person to enter the giveaway was number two, and so on and so forth. Then I used a random number generator I found on Google, and the number it generated is now the official winner of the Holiday Giveaway 2012.

Now the winner of the lovely necklace and bracelet is… drum-roll please… Dalia Bahena!!!

She happens to be a good friend of mine, and also the tenth person to enter the giveaway, and number 10 was her lucky number, so congratulations!!!

I will personally be contacting her to let her know about her win (although I’m pretty sure she’s reading this)  and arrange the delivery method of her grand prize.

Thank you all who participated, and to those who didn’t win, don’t worry, there will be more giveaways to come in the future, so stay tuned.

Después de un par de días muy atareados pero muy disfrutados, por fin tuve la oportunidad de sentarme y hacer el sorteo al azar para escoger al ganador del Holiday Giveaway 2012. Sin afán de crear más suspenso, déjenme primero aclarar que método usé para garantizar que el sorteo fuera realmente aleatorio. A cada participante le asigné un número basado en su posición en la línea de entrada al sorteo, es decir a la primera persona que entró al giveaway se le asignó el número uno, a la segunda persona el número dos, y asi sucesivamente. Después utilizé un generador de números aleatorios que encontré en Google, y el número que generó es ahora el ganador oficial del Holiday Giveaway 2012.

Ahora, el ganador del lindo collar y pulsera es… tambores por favor… Dalia Bahena!!

Ella resulta que es una buena amiga mía, y también fue la décima persona en entrar al sorteo, y el 10 fue su número de la suerte, asi que muchas felicidades!!

Yo personalmente la estaré contactando para informarle que ganó (aunque estoy bastante segura que está leyendo esto), y para acordar el método de entrega del gran premio.

Muchísimas gracias a todos los que participaron, y a los que no ganaron, no se preocupen, habrá mas giveaways por venir en el futuro, asi que estén pendientes.

Look of the Day: Busy Busy Busy

This past weekend was, you guessed it, busy busy busy! I had three lovely Holiday get-togethers to attend, and that meant triple the food, fun, and of course, fashion.
Today’s look of the day is what I wore to the first gathering on Friday. It was an all girl Mexican theme event, that included tamales and champurrado (a typical hot Mexican drink for the holidays). I was overjoyed to have been included in this party for many reasons, one of course being getting to indulge in some classic holiday Mexican treats, but also because it presented the opportunity to meet some fabulous women (who as an added bonus all spoke Spanish, which I don’t get to practice much here in Phoenix).
I had a blast, and was even introduced to a different type of gift exchange (one that apparently is pretty common, but that I had never even heard of), a white elephant gift exchange (if you don’t know what that is either, I suggest googling it, but more importantly trying it! I promise you will laugh your head off, hehe). Also worth mentioning is the fact that the hostess had 3 full size Christmas trees in her house, which I loved… talk about Christmas spirit, huh?
So, since I’m on this topic, and Christina (the hostess) happens to be one of my beloved readers, I’ll take this opportunity to thank her… Thank you Christy for a wonderful evening, you are a rock star hostess, and I hope to be hanging out with you and all the girls again soon!
Now, moving on to the topic of the outfit, I was wearing a pair of eggplant colored wide leg pants that I found in my mom’s closet on my last trip to Mexico. I hit the jackpot on that trip because she allowed me to thoroughly search her closet for any treasures that didn’t fit her anymore, and boy, did I score big on several pieces (these pants included). Unfortunately, the color of the pants didn’t translate to the picture very well, so you’ll just have to trust me when I tell you it’s an amazing shade of eggplant.
I added a pop of turquoise with the pumps and earrings, first because I love the purple/turquoise color combo, and also because it was a gloomy rainy day and I needed some color to brighten it up.
The jacket is something else that didn’t get much justice in the picture. It’s kind of a tweed fabric with a biker jacket shape, but the best part is it has sparkly silver thread going through the whole thing. I’ll try to get some good close up pictures of it as soon as I get a chance, so you can really see it in all its glory.

Este fin de semana pasado estuve, como ya habrán adivinado, ocupada, ocupada y ocupada! Tuve tres lindas reuniones navideñas a las que asistir, lo que significó triple de comida, diversión, y por supuesto moda.
El look del día de hoy es lo que me puse para la primera reunión el viernes en la noche. Fue una posada navideña al estilo mexicano para mujeres solamente, e incluyó tamales y champurrado. Estuve más que feliz de haber sido incluida en esta fiesta por muchas razones, una siendo por supuesto el hecho de deleitarme con un par de típicos platillos mexicanos para estas fechas, pero también porque fue la oportunidad perfecta para conocer a varias fabulosas mujeres (que como bono extra para mí, todas hablaban español, el cual no tengo mucha oportunidad de practicar aquí en Phoenix).
Me la pasé increíble, y hasta me introdujeron a un tipo diferente de intercambio de regalos (uno que aparentemente es muy común aquí, pero del cual yo nunca había escuchado siquiera), llamado intercambio de regalos de elefante blanco (si tampoco sabes lo que es, te recomiendo que lo googlelees, pero sobretodo que lo pruebes! Te prometo que te vas a morir de risa, jiji). También cabe mencionar que la anfitriona tenía 3 árboles de navidad de tamaño completo en su casa, cosa que amé… Eso es espíritu navideño, no?
Y ya que estoy hablando del tema, y Christina (la anfitriona) es una de mis adoradas lectoras, aprovecho la oportunidad para agradecerle… Gracias Christy, me la pasé de maravilla, eres una rockstar como anfitriona, y espero poder disfrutar de nuevo contigo y todas las chicas muy pronto!
Ahora, pasando al tema del outfit, el pantalón de pierna ancha color berenjena que usé es algo que encontré en el closet de mi mamá en mi último viaje a México. Me saqué la lotería en ese viaje porque mi mamá me dejó esculcarle todo el closet en busca de cosas que ya no le quedaran, y vaya que encontré varios tesoros, incluyendo este pantalón. Desafortunadamente, el color no se tradujó muy bien en la foto, así que sólo confíen en mí cuando les digo que es un tono maravilloso de morado berenjena.
Agregué un poco de azul turquesa con los zapatos y aretes, primero porque me encanta la combinación morado/turquesa, y luego porque fue un día gris y lluvioso que necesitaba un poco de color para alegrarlo. El saco es otra cosa a la que las fotos no le hacen justicia. Es como una tela de tweed, pero con hechura de chaqueta de motociclista, pero lo mejor es que tiene un hilo metálico plateado por toda la chaqueta. Trataré de sacarle unas fotos con tomas de cerca en cuanto tenga tiempo, a ver si así la pueden apreciar en todo su esplendor.
