Look of the Day: Flop

When you are really passionate about fashion and you love playing with it, you have to be prepared and willing to make mistakes. We would all love to get it right every time and always be considered a “best dressed”, but reality is if you are a true fashionista, chances are you’ll often end up on somebody’s “worst dressed list”, whether it’s one of your friend’s or a stranger judging your street style. Of course, if you a true fashionista, you probably won’t care because you dress for yourself and your own enjoyment.
I know that is the case at least for me. I love clothes and I love the process of mixing them up, experimenting and playing with the endless possibilities that each garment may carry. However, despite not caring whether people love or hate what I wear, it’s still sometimes disappointing when I come up with an idea, a concept of an outfit that it’s just fabulous in my mind, and once I actually try it, it either doesn’t work at all or doesn’t work for me and my body type. And the disappointment is even greater, when I don’t realize this right away by looking in the mirror, and the fact that a particular look isn’t really working is only revealed to me once I look at pictures of myself wearing the flop. Such is the case of today’s look of the day.
I had envisioned my ultra feminine tulle skirt paired with a tough pair of Dr. Martens and a chambray shirt resulting in a tough girly & very cool look. However, after looking at the pictures, I wasn’t pleased with how it looked on me. I still think the concept could work and turn out to be über chic with a few slight changes. For starters, maybe if the skirt was a bit shorter, and the chambray shirt had a better fit. Of course, someone a few inches taller and a few pounds lighter might be able to easily pull off this look, nonetheless it is just not my favorite on me.
I decided to post the photos of it anyway because I wanted to share with you that even with my love of fashion and the time I dedicate to the “study” of it, I still often get it wrong. But at the end of the day, what I love it’s the process, it’s about having fun with it and oh, I do! That part I do get right every time. In my opinion, whether we’re talking fashion or life, making mistakes keeps things interesting, and perfection can be boring!

Hello, my name is Abril and I am a shoe addict. But you probably already knew. Actually, scratch that. I don’t think I could technically be considered an addict because, doesn’t addiction imply you’ve reached harmful levels of dependency on something? I think I’m more of a social shoe lover, LOL.

Anyway, I do have a little collection of shoes, definitely not big enough to compete in the big leagues, and not that I’m trying, but I just added one more pair to it. I had been wanting mirror-like silver pointy toe pumps for a while, and spotted just the perfect ones at Shoedazzle the other day, naturally I couldn’t resist. I scored a ridiculously good deal on them, so can you really blame me for not being able to pass it by?

I’ve already worn them once, and I can’t wait to wear them again and show you because they really do add a good dose of pizzazz to even the simplest outfit.

Out & About

Out & About by abrilscorner

About a year ago I discovered Polyvore, a site where you can put outfits together from their seemingly infinite database of photos of clothes, shoes, beauty and accessories. From the collections at Target to the high end designers, you can find about any fashion item you might be looking for. I loved the concept since first hearing about it, but I hadn’t had much time to start playing with it, until recently.
Of course, building fantasy looks (like putting together the look you would wear to the Oscars, hehe) is one way of having fun with Polyvore. However, there might be a more practical use for it. Given their extensive gallery of items, you could probably find a lot of the ones already in your closet, and then use them to build outfits you could actually wear.
How many times have you opened your closet which couldn’t even fit a bobby pin in there anymore and emphatically declared you have nothing to wear? I’ve certainly lost count! However, the truth is the problem in those cases is not having nothing to wear, but rather not having any new and exciting ideas about how to wear what we do have. It’s also true that 15 minutes before having to walk out the door fully dressed is not the best time to try to get creative and experimental about your look. So this is where Polyvore has potential to be a life saver. You can play and experiment all you want, really get your most fashionable creative juices going, and save all those wonderful new looks that come to mind for next time you’re facing the “nothing to wear” problem.
Anyway, that’s just an idea. Let me know if you decide to give a try and how it goes. And if you do, you can follow my Polyvore account at http://abrilscorner.polyvore.com
Here I leave you with one of my first Polyvore creations, a casual little outfit that would be perfect for running errands on a hot summer day.
