Weighing My Options (continued)

Okay, time to pick it up where we left off.  I was talking on a recent post about weight and body image issues, particularly my own.  My weight has gone up and down for several years now, but in the last couple of years my conflict evolved to wondering if I really want to keep attempting to lose weight or if I want to learn to be happy with my current size.  Many questions have come to my mind related to this, and I wrote most of them before, but here’s the recap:

If I love my figure even at my current weight, couldn’t I just be happy staying like this? I don’t have any major weight-related health problems (no high cholesterol, diabetes or heart problems), so there shouldn’t be anything wrong with being a plus-size, right?  What about self acceptance and loving yourself as is? Could I even stay at my current weight or becoming complacent with it will just make me more likely to gain even more (which I certainly don’t want!)? Would it just make me a quitter if I stop trying to lose weight and learn to be happy as a full figure girl?

On the other hand, there’s still that voice inside of me telling me I should lose weight, telling me I would look better if I did, but is that really what I want? Or is it just the pressure I (and all of us women really) feel to try to fit in to the social beauty standard? Do I really want to lose weight for myself or just to please other people? Should I try to conform to what others consider beautiful and acceptable or learn to define those on my own terms? Would it really make me happier to be skinny again?

As you can see, many questions indeed, and that’s not even half of the back and forth that goes on in my mind. But here’s what I’ve gotten out of it so far… Yes, I would love to be skinny again, there’s no denying that. However, that little voice that tells me that, that tells me I should lose weight and I should be skinny, is none other than my ego. My ego who feeds greatly off of other people’s judgments, and knows most people consider skinny beautiful; my ego who hates to think about what the people that met me when I was skinny think when they see me now (“Gosh, what happened to her? She used to be so thin, look at her now, so sad”); my ego that sees skinny girls rocking their skinny jeans and wishes I could wear them too; my ego that tells me I should wear only the things that hide my weight the most; my ego who would make my life miserable should I let it reign over it. But I don’t.

Sure, my ego takes over and rains on my parade on several occasions, and that’s never fun, but fortunately I have gotten much better at recognizing it and not fully engaging with it when I do see it for what it really is. I just kind of let it be, and then, slowly I’m reminded that there is a lot I love about my body even now, and most importantly that this imperfect looking body has served me so well and carry me thru so much in life. And huge gratitude starts arising… and true love for my body and myself… and also a little bit of guilt for not being as good to my body as my body has been to me.  Also, I am reminded that I am so much more than flesh and bones, and that I have more to offer the world than just my physical appearance.  And huge gratitude comes over me once again.

So all this has led to my new take on my weight and where I want to go with it from now on. I am done trying to lose weight and obsessing over the scale and the tape measure, done! Okay, I am not entirely done, I still have that little voice sometimes telling me “I wish I was skinny, I wish I could wear this and that, I wish…”, but I want to be done! And I think that’s huge, that’s the beginning of change. I don’t want to want to be skinny anymore, nevertheless I have wanted to be skinny for so long that this change, this mental shift is going to take a while. I can’t reprogram myself and my mind overnight, but I can definitely do it over time. It’s a process, change is always a process. And that’s what I’m working on right now.

Now, that said, it doesn’t mean I am done trying to live a healthier lifestyle. In fact, more than ever I want to eat healthy and stay active, but it’s coming from a different place now. Whenever I tried this before, it was all about weight and looks and vanity, and sure health, but that was almost just an afterthought. This time I really want to treat my body like it deserves to be treated, with love and respect and gratitude. Even though like I mentioned before I don’t have any major weight-related health problems, I’ve had some other issues (a hormone imbalance and GERD) for years that got worse than ever last year, and that have served as a big wake up call to start taking better care of myself. And if by taking better care of myself, I happen to lose weight, great! But if not, that’s okay, I want to be okay with that too, I want to be happy with myself no matter what.

It’s still not easy for me the whole healthy lifestyle thing. Bad habits die hard, and I am really not fond of the gym yet I’m too fond of pasta and desserts, but I am going to keep trying. I know I will fail sometimes, there will still be days when I don’t work out and eat too many carbs, but that’s okay. I’m not shooting for perfection anymore, in any way, in any area of my life. I am just shooting for persistency and perseverance, for not throwing in the towel after things go wrong once or twice or how ever many times they can go wrong.  I am shooting for long term success and happiness, and if there is something I’ve learned in almost 29 years, it’s that those depend greatly on how you handle your failures.

So there you have it, that’s where my size 12 bottom and I stand at the moment on this topic.

Hope you had a lovely weekend!

Told ya I used to be skinny! Hehe
